Road Restrictions (DCC Consultation)

The much anticipated ‘yellow lines trial’ has been published by Devon County Council. I’ve summarised the proposals and added maps to help visualise the proposals – there are 5 main areas being included in this proposal:

  • Younghayes Road / Seven Acres / Three Corner Field (Ref: 6030-139a)
  • Younghayes Road / Barn Orchard / Copse Close Lane (Ref: 6030-139b)
  • Younghayes Road / Best Park (Ref: 6030-139c)
  • Yonder Acre Way / Crabtree Close (Ref: 6030-139d)
  • Tillhouse Road / Crannaford Lane (around the CEC) (Ref 6030-139e)

My Personal Take:

I think this is a good basic step that should have happened a long time ago – it is far from perfect and won’t cover many of the issues people have with driving, parking and road safety.

The restrictions that would be on Younghayes Road / Barn Orchard / Copse Close Lane will be helpful because that area is a real problem generally with driving and parking, but it won’t fix some of the other fundamental flaws like the lack of safe crossings or the terribly thought out curve and parking arrangements by the shops.

Those covering the CEC area on the corner are very much welcomed as that area is a real pinch point at peak times during school drop offs and pick ups in particular and I popped down there 2-3 times in the last month to see for myself just how bad it gets. Again, I don’t think it’s the ‘full’ answer we need, but it is a small step forwards.

The others will have some benefit, especially to helping residents in those bits get in/out of the roads a little more safely.

I’ve been asked more generally if I think it will help with issues of speeding and no, I don’t believe it will fundamentally change that at all – but I do suspect it will reduce the risk of people pulling out or into roads where visibility is reduced by cars stupidly parked right on the corners, and the changes around the Education Campus I do think are going to help with the ongoing trouble there.
